Athletic and REI Made a Beer for the Trailhead, Not the Bar.

Athletic Brewing and REI have teamed up on Get Mossy, a Kolsch-style non-alcoholic beer with citrus and pine notes. It is a small launch with a clear idea behind it: put the alcohol-free beer where the active life already is.

Athletic Brewing has partnered with the outdoor co-op REI on a non-alcoholic beer called Get Mossy, a Kolsch-style brew with citrus and pine notes aimed squarely at the hike, the campsite, and the drive home. The collaboration pairs the biggest name in alcohol-free beer with the retailer most associated with the outdoors, and the beer style, a light, crisp, sessionable Kolsch, fits the setting exactly.

The logic is the same one Athletic has been running region by region: meet people inside an identity they already hold. An REI member who hikes and camps is a natural customer for a beer you can actually enjoy before driving down a mountain, and a co-op built on the active, outdoors life is a credible place to find it.

The Cr(af)ted Take

The outdoors has always been the most honest argument for alcohol-free beer. The trailhead, the campsite, and the paddle out are exactly the places where a real beer is a bad idea and a cold non-alcoholic one is perfect, and Athletic pairing with REI simply plants the flag where the use case was already obvious. It is less a marketing stretch than a recognition of where this beer belongs.

It also underlines the pattern worth watching across the whole category. The brands breaking through are the ones attaching alcohol-free to something people already love doing, a team, a region, a trail, rather than selling it as a health decision. Make the zero-proof option the natural thing to reach for at the summit, and you never have to explain why it has no alcohol in it.
