La Marca has rolled out its first non-alcoholic sparkling wine across the US, made by dealcoholizing Italian wine. It is a meaningful entry because La Marca is not a startup asking shoppers to trust an unfamiliar name; it is a mainstream Prosecco brand people already reach for, now offering a zero-proof version in the same aisle.
Sparkling is also a smart place to start. Non-alcoholic wine is the toughest corner of the category to get right, and still wine suffers most when the alcohol comes out, because alcohol carries much of the body and aroma. Bubbles and bright acidity do a lot of that lifting on their own, which is why a sparkling version has a better chance of tasting like the real thing, and why a celebratory pour is an easier sell than a quiet glass of red.
The Cr(af)ted Take
This is the Mondavi story again, from the other end of the price shelf. Non-alcoholic wine has lagged beer and spirits largely because credible, recognizable makers were slow to show up for it, and a name shoppers already know lowers the risk of that first bottle enormously. When La Marca puts its label on alcohol-free bubbles, it tells a Prosecco drinker that the zero-proof option is a real one, not a bottom-shelf experiment.
The toast is where this matters most. The hardest moment for a non-drinker has always been the one where everyone raises a glass and theirs is water or a soda, and a familiar sparkling name in that moment does real work. Whether it converts people still comes down to the pour, but a recognizable label is what gets the bottle onto the table in the first place.
