Glassware

Rocks Glass

A short, wide tumbler used for spirit-forward cocktails served over ice — also called an Old Fashioned glass.

A rocks glass (also called an Old Fashioned glass or lowball) is a short, wide tumbler — typically 6 to 10 oz — designed for drinks served on the rocks. Its width accommodates a large ice cube comfortably. The heavy base keeps it stable and makes it satisfying to hold. It's the glass for Old Fashioneds, Negronis, and neat or on-the-rocks spirit pours. The double rocks glass is simply a larger version (10 to 14 oz) that accommodates more ice or a larger drink.

Why It Matters

The rocks glass focuses attention on the drink's color and clarity. A well-made Old Fashioned in a heavy rocks glass over a clear large cube looks as good as it tastes.

Where You'll Use It

Old Fashioned, Negroni, Whiskey on the rocks, and any cocktail built over a single large cube.

Worth Knowing

Double Rocks

A double rocks glass (10-14 oz) is a larger version of the standard rocks glass. Used for larger drinks, double pours of spirit, or cocktails built over more ice. Also appropriate for drinks like a Penicillin where the volume of ingredients is larger than a standard Old Fashioned.
