How to Make It
- In a julep cup or rocks glass, gently muddle the mint leaves with the simple syrup — just enough to release the oils, not bruise them.
- Add the Alcohol-Free Whiskey and stir briefly.
- Pack the glass tightly with crushed ice and stir until the outside of the glass frosts.
- Top with more crushed ice, mound it high, and garnish with a fresh mint sprig.
- Serve with a short straw so the mint fragrance reaches you with every sip.
Why This Works
A julep is really just three things — spirit, sugar, and cold — held together by aroma. The mint never gets shaken or stirred into the drink. It's muddled gently, just enough to release its oils, then you drink through the sprig on top. Nearly all of the mint you experience arrives through your nose, not your tongue.
Crushed ice is not a garnish decision here; it's the engine of the drink. Its enormous surface area chills the whiskey almost instantly and bleeds meltwater into it steadily, softening and lengthening the drink as you go. A julep is designed to evolve in the glass.
With only a quarter ounce of syrup, this is a barely-sweetened drink — which is exactly right. The sweetness is a frame, not the picture. What you're meant to taste is cold whiskey and cold mint, in that order.
The Alcohol-Free Swap
Alcohol-Free Whiskey delivers a clove-forward warmth that pairs beautifully with fresh mint — the same character you'd find in a quality bourbon, minus the buzz.
