Beer Cocktail

Non-Alcoholic Radler

The shandy's grapefruit cousin: alcohol-free beer and grapefruit soda, crisp and bittersweet. Named for the cyclists it was invented to refresh.

Ingredients

  • 1 partNon-alcoholic lager, cold
  • 1 partGrapefruit soda, cold
  • 1Grapefruit wedge, to garnish

Looking for the alcohol-free spirits? I shop Better Rhodes. It's the best AF selection I've found.

How to Make It

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  2. Pour equal parts non-alcoholic lager and grapefruit soda.
  3. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

Why This Works

The radler was created for German cyclists who wanted refreshment without losing the afternoon, which makes the alcohol-free version almost redundant: it was always about the citrus and the fizz.

Grapefruit's bitterness echoes the hops, so the drink tastes more complex than its two ingredients suggest. A pinch of salt sharpens it further if you like.

Use a dry, quality grapefruit soda. An overly sweet one buries the beer; a bittersweet one lets it show through.

The Alcohol-Free Swap

A crisp non-alcoholic lager is ideal. The cleaner and drier the beer, the more the grapefruit reads as bittersweet rather than sugary.
