The Team That Built a Billion-Dollar Tequila Is Now Betting on Zero Proof

George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman sold Casamigos to Diageo for up to a billion dollars. Their next act is a non-alcoholic beer brand that just raised $15 million, and the pedigree is the story.

Crazy Mountain, a non-alcoholic beer brand co-founded by George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman, announced a $15 million funding round in late April, led by CAVU Consumer Partners with participation from Coatue and Discovery Land Company. The same three founders launched Casamigos tequila in 2013 and sold it to Diageo about four years later in a deal reportedly worth up to a billion dollars.

The brand launched with two products, an Original and a Lime, and is run by CEO Steve Fechheimer, formerly the chief executive of craft brewer New Belgium. It is positioned squarely at core beer drinkers who want to moderate without giving up the ritual, and is rolling out to US retailers through 2026.

Crazy Mountain is beer, not a cocktail spirit, but the signal it sends reaches the whole alcohol-free category.

The Cr(af)ted Take

Pay attention to who is making this bet, not just what they are making. The Casamigos founders essentially wrote the modern playbook for turning a celebrity-backed premium spirit into a billion-dollar exit. When those same people put their names and serious money behind a zero-proof brand, it is a statement that the alcohol-free category is where they see the next decade of growth. That conviction, from that team, matters more than any single product.

For anyone still treating alcohol-free as a passing wellness fad, this is a data point that is hard to wave away. The smart money that built the last generation of drinks brands is moving in. It also raises the bar on quality and marketing across the board, which is good news for everyone who drinks this way. When the people who made tequila aspirational turn their attention to zero proof, the whole category gets more serious.
