The Original

Non-Alcoholic Old Fashioned

The template every other whiskey drink is measured against: spirit, sugar, bitters, and an orange peel, stirred slow over one big cube. Our alcohol-free version keeps all of that quiet complexity and proves the drink was never really about the proof.

Ingredients

  • 2 ozAlcohol-Free Whiskey
  • ¼ ozSimple syrup (or 1 sugar cube)
  • 3 dashesAromatic bitters
  • 1Large ice cube
  • GarnishExpressed orange peel

The Proportions

  • 2¾ oz Alcohol-Free Whiskey
  • ¾ oz Simple syrup
  • 3 dashes Aromatic bitters
  • 1 Large ice cube
  • Garnish Expressed orange peel

How to Make It

  1. Add the alcohol-free whiskey, simple syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir for 20 to 30 seconds, until well chilled and properly diluted.
  3. Strain over one large cube in a rocks glass.
  4. Express an orange peel over the top, rub it around the rim, and drop it in.

Why This Works

An Old Fashioned is a stirred drink, not a shaken one, and that choice is the whole point. Stirring chills and dilutes without adding air, so the drink stays clear, silky, and slow. Without alcohol carrying the flavor, that gentle dilution matters even more: a little water is what opens the spice and softens the edges into something you can sip for an hour.

The bitters do the heavy lifting here, so be generous. In the original, alcohol amplifies every aromatic dash; without it, three dashes give you the backbone that two would in a boozy version. This is the drink that shows why bitters are not optional seasoning but the structure of the whole thing.

The orange peel is aroma, not decoration. Expressed over the surface, its oils are the first thing you smell and therefore most of what you taste. Skip the cocktail cherry syrup and the muddled fruit salad. Sugar, bitters, good alcohol-free whiskey, one big cube, and a peel is all a proper Old Fashioned has ever needed.

The Alcohol-Free Swap

Alcohol-Free Whiskey brings the charred oak, vanilla, and warm baking spice the drink is built on, without the alcohol. In a recipe this stripped-back, the quality of the bottle is the drink, so reach for one you would happily sip on its own.
